For working on High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems knowing basic Linux command line commands is essential to navigate files, launch and monitor jobs, control the powerful computational resources, and automate complex workflows efficiently – and this is exactly what this course provides.
This course is targeted for our new users who might not have worked on the Linux command line before. You will learn how to login to the ASC systems and step-by-step we will show you how to work on the Linux command line and a few basic things that will help you to organize your workflows on the cluster. Focusing on hands-on teaching throughout the course, you will immediately try out what you've heard and adapt it to your own needs.
After attending this course you are prepared for and might consider to continue with the course Introduction to Working on the ASC Clusters to be able to use the ASC supercomputers and especially their queuing system efficiently.
Agenda & Content
For a detailed timetable and additional information, please see Agenda & Content in the left menu.
Target audience, eligibility & prices
This course is for users of HPC systems who need to learn the Linux command line basics.
This course is open and free of charge for users (or soon to be users) of the ASC systems only.
Entry level & prerequisites
Basic/beginners – no previous knowledge is required for this course.
Course format
This course will be delivered as a LIVE ONLINE COURSE (using Zoom).
Hands-on labs
All participants will get a temporary user account on one of the ASC systems to do the hands-on labs.
You will use your own laptop or workstation to connect to ASC and do the hands-on exercises. If you use Windows please install the following software packages prior to the course: PuTTY and FileZilla or winscp.
Accepted participants will be contacted a few days before the course and asked to do a short pre-assignment that has to be completed before the course starts.
Lecturers
Luis Casillas-Trujillo (ASC Research Center, TU Wien) Dr. Luis Casillas-Trujillo joined ASC in July 2024. He received his PhD in Materials Science from the University of Tennessee, focusing on computational materials science. He also holds a masters degree in applied math and technical physics from Politechnika Gdanska. For his postdoc at Linkoping University in Sweden, he studied dislocations properties, focusing on the effect of magnetic disorder on the dislocation core structure of iron, and also joined the National Supercomputer Center (NSC) as an application expert with a focus in providing support to users that use material science simulation software, such as LAMMPS, VASP, and WIEN2k. He has vast user experience in multiple HPC centers such as NSC, PDC, HPC2N in Sweden, LUMI, LEONARDO, Meluxina in Europe, and also HPC systems in the USA with NERSC and local clusters at the University of Tennessee. His current research interests are in machine learning interatomic potentials for dislocation properties in high entropy alloys.
Atul Singh (ASC Research Center, TU Wien) Dr. Atul Singh is currently working as an engineer in the software team at Austrian Scientific Computing ASC, TU Wien. He holds a PhD as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow from the University of Southampton, UK, in engineering design optimization, and has previously worked as an HPC specialist at the University of Nottingham, UK. During his MSc studies at the University of Rostock, Germany, he completed internships at several academic and industrial institutions, including the Chair of Aero Engine Design at BTU Cottbus, Germany, CINECA Supercomputing Center as a PRACE Summer of HPC 2018 participant in Bologna, Italy, and Scania in Södertälje, Sweden, where he worked on exhaust aftertreatment systems. This centers his expertise in engineering optimization, artificial intelligence, computational fluid dynamics, and simulations to name a few.
