About the Speaker
Christos Kotselidis is an Associate Professor at the University of Manchester and Chief Engineer at Nimble Innovation working on hardware/software co-designed Virtual Machines and embedded software. His research interests are in the areas of chip design, micro-architecture research, hw/sw co-designed CPUs, Compilers, Virtual Machines and Garbage Collection.

From Java to AI-Assisted Web UIs with Vaadin
In recent years, the development of web applications has changed significantly with the introduction of Typescript and many different web frameworks. Modern web applications combine diverse technologies, process extensive data and user interactions, and can run as native applications on various end devices. In this context, Vaadin Flow presents itself as an efficient alternative for developing complex web applications, allowing seamless use of modern web technologies with Java. The framework comes with a library of easily customizable WebComponents, an intuitive Java API, and automated server-browser communication. With Vaadin Flow, developers can create full-stack web applications entirely in Java without having to learn the complexities of HTML, Typescript/JavaScript, and CSS.
In my talk, I will introduce Vaadin, and show the core features of Flow as well as our extensive component library. In a demo, I will give a small hands-on introduction to the framework, and in addition to its customizability, show how easily Java developers can implement modern web applications.
Building on this foundation, we will explore how AI can become an active assistant within the UI. Using natural language and server-side tool calling, users can filter data, populate forms, and navigate workflows. I will demonstrate how Vaadin’s server-side Java architecture connects an LLM to defined application actions while preserving business rules and keeping users in control.

Sebastian Kühnau ist seit zwei Jahrzehnten Java-Junkie und schon während seines Studiums Vaadin verfallen. Seit 2016 arbeitet er in verschiedenen Tech-Rollen bei Vaadin und unterstützt Kunden, maßgeschneiderte Webanwendungen zu entwickeln. Nebenher ist er zudem auf verschiedenen Events in und mit der Community aktiv.
